The TONAL idea factory!
In my "Creative Fundamentals" class we are currently in the process of composing modal tunes and modal backing tracks. Here is a chart to help come up with ideas for chords/arpeggios/licks/whatever when doing so. This method works for any mode/tonality when you have 7 notes to deal with. As you can see, there are loads of options:
7 one-note options
6 two-note options (when you also have the root)
15 three-note options (when you also have the root)
20 four-note options (when you also have the root)
15 five-note options (when you also have the root)
6 six-note options (when you also have the root)
1 seven-note option.

Here’s a morning technique workout I thought was cool. Borrowing concepts from drum rudiments to improve your technique. Can you think of others that are helpful? Here’s the pdf of the PIMA exercise: www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/7kltqg4rzmqtku0zzxo86/String-Skipping-PIMA-exercise.pdf?rlkey=3izteqles9yqwmkthfslrdvhm&dl=0 If you’d like to buy something: noeljohnston.com/merch.html
Difference Tones

Learn about Difference tones (aka Beat Frequencies, “Tartini tones,” Heterodyne, under tones) Fuzz and Distortion exaggerate these “difference tones” (the difference between two frequencies) which can make certain intervals sound out of tune. Power chords (4ths and 5ths) sound great, but a lot of other intervals can sound off which explains why some chords don’t sound good with fuzz and distort...

Inversion practice reveals hidden gem!

Lol! I'm working on some ultimate clickbait'y titles. How'd I do? Seriously, though... Inversions can be a great source of inspiration. The minor "Line Cliché" (also known as "Chromatic Embellishment of Static Harmony") was revealed here. And it doesn't have to be hard to solo over. There are more. My book, "The 4-Note Universe" has all the 4-note chords in it: www.noeljohnston.com/merch.html

"Pitch Class Inversion" in REAL life (tune examples)

The "Flippening" part two. (Part one: ua-cam.com/video/VOeLUueliOE/v-deo.html ) There are so many, but here are some actual tunes which use Chromatic Mediants via the Ionian-Phrygian Pitch Class Inversion (or at least can be explained and/or analyzed thusly) Have You Met Miss Jones (Rogers & Hart, 1937) Like Someone in Love (Jimmy van Heusen, 1944) Lady Bird (Tadd Dameron, 1948) Giant Steps (Jo...
Why “Chromatic Mediants” sound so good!
Переглядів 166 тис.2 місяці тому
Enter the rabbit hole and learn pitch class inversion and the Ionian/Phrygian relationship. It works with any scale, btw. Also, this explains the sonically interesting things that “Negative Harmony,” and “Modal Interchange” try to explain, just in a different way. I think this “pitch-class-inversion” stuff does a better job explaining it, imo. Chromatic Mediants, Coltrane changes, Tadd Dameron ...

Another JAM. Thank you :)
Thanks.It's a beautiful mood too.
Absolutely incredible channel, just bought your voicing modes book and am so excited to dive in
This is such a good lesson. I graduated with a Bachelors in trombone performance and after graduating, have been teaching myself guitar. Learning the fretboard is a way bigger deal than I thought it’d be lol. Anyway, thank you for the lesson!
Your channel is a goldmine
I just discovered this channel 5 minutes ago, and you're already one of my favorite guitar players. Can't wait to learn from you!
How to ruin Bach's music!
is this real? i am too lazy to verify
lol! This was my attempt at verification after seeing Adam Neely talking about it. It’s real!
very tasty playing and lesson...thx..
love the pool balls !!! Great way to show the modes !
That sounded beautiful!
Amazing. Thank you! Subbed
Lost me once the chord charts stopped showing up
So… I can use this sigil-heavy gematria to play smooth jazz. Good to know.
Excellent, your content is a much appreciated horse of a different color.
we in Germany call that Komplimentärintervalle, "Intervall" is the name for the distance of two notes to each other, "Komplimentär" means, they complete each other to an octave. To explain it this way is actually much easier. I find it important to recognize, that those complementair intervalls have the same character. 4th to a 5th (they both sound square), 3rd to a 6t (they sound both harmonic), 2nd to a seventh (they both sound disharmonic). So there are in fact only three different classes of sounds: square, harm, onic and disharmonic.
i am so jealous of your technology. ive been exploring this concept for about 3 years and it broke my computer. got a fancy set of colored pencil set and combined it color theory... but if i had a better computer, wishes would be horses
Thanks for sharing these interesting intervallic concepts. On the chord progessions you vamp: Dm11 - Db maj7#11 - Am11 - Fm7; which chord functions as tonic, or I?
the "goofy" progression reminds me of Ween
Superb Noel.👌
I love these discrete sets of notes and cords and the continuous change of colour of your telecaster... many thanks for inspiring ideas!😆 BTW what kind of rhythm software do you use? Thanks.
Thank you! I believe I was using the built in rhythm/drums in Cubase (groove agent) for a lot of these ones.
Fantastic material! And what a great collection of guitars... each of these would suffice for a world career 😆
maybe Alan Pasqua's Fred song an example such as Flying in a Blue Dream?
Watching this video reminded me of the book titled "Audicious Euphony" worth checking out for anyone interested.
Nerd.
Hi Noel, you didn't lie, you really throw us into the deep end with the book - but it's brilliant! Thank you very much!
Great lesson. Thank you so much.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! THANKS FOR THIS!! GOD BLESS YOU!!!
big fan!
Brilliant
Good stuff, Maynard...
Why not drop 3,4 and like double drop 2 drop 3? Is it just to awkward on guitar to use all the inversions? I'm asking because with open strings it's possible to use tripple drop 2 drop 3, I was just using tripple drop 4 drop 3.
Yes, indeed! You can do a lot with octave displacement and note doubling. For the voicing math, the order of notes is what I was dealing with. A 4-note chord CEGB (closed position maj7 chord) for instance, is the same order in a Drop-4 (if you drop the 4th voice - the C - down an octave, it’s still CEGB). If octave displacement possibilities have to be considered in the math, it would go to infinity.
Sounds so good. Has a lydian type feel maybe. Maybe not??? trying to wrap my brain around that tonality.
This one is really colorful but really open, right? Assumed to be major, but doesn’t have to be.
@@nohjoh08 Thanks for all your imaginings. Really love what you are doing with music. Cool and beautiful/theory nerd stuff. Flippenings of the color wheel and such. Very interesting videos. Be well brother.
Just a big smile from me :)
Classic!
Oh yea this is my fav 3rd gear of the fan, now let's come 6th gear jam for 32 triplets XD
I hope this video blows up! That was slick 😮
Thinking more deeply, if this dog drinks water ten times a day, you already have a full album on your hands!!! Never leave him without water !!!
Who is the song by? Looking for the actual song.
“I Need Thee Every Hour” by Robert Lowry
Ring mod without the pedal
This was dense and overly complicated. How does this translate into music? this makes no sense.
KILLING!
I’m confused, with this method the chromatic mediant of A is Dm (if i flip the entire thing) but online i read that it should be F (if you just play the maj chord that is a M3 below), maybe in set theory the chromatic mediant is not the same as the one found in normal theory, anyway i see for example that in misty there is this modulation happening (where you flip the entire thing) so i guess that it is more useful this way. What is the name of the whole flippening?
I hate to criticize and correct me if I'm wrong but I downloaded the file and started messing around with it I think you got all the pitches and frequencies right but I believe you misnamed the name for example G1 isn't 49 herts but G2 is so if you revise this it probably would save a lot of people headache and I still think the videos great just a small mistake in editing I was always taught low E on guitar falls on E2 of a piano and that's the Lowest note on a guitar.
Hey thanks for your comment. Trying to understand what you mean. Are you saying G1 isn’t 49 and should be labeled as G2? On my chart, G1 is 49 (and is the low G on a bass), the lowest G on a guitar is G2 (which is 98). Are you saying that’s incorrect? I do have E 82.41 (lowest note on a guitar) as E2 on that chart.
I also assumed he stopped at E1 because that's the lowest E on the guitar but it's not E2 is so that whole range screwed me up so I would play to notes with difference of E1 and it wouldn't harmonize right when I plucked an open string then I realized because everything was and octave low
@@nohjoh08 it could also just be my ignorance maybe he was doing it for bass players too 🤷♂️
All the frequency charts I have found have the lowest note on guitar labeled as E2 (82.ish Hertz). E1 is the low E on a bass.
@@nohjoh08 ok maybe he included E1 for bass and I was just assuming that's where he stopped because I assumed it was the range of guitar maybe he did the chart for a wider range than the guitar can play if you know what I mean it just confused me when I first looked at it
I have no idea where I learned it but I've been doing the string skipping portion of this exercise at 1:12 for 20 years. Was probably in a 90's guitar world mag
reminds me of any King Crimson tune...😝
Great lesson! The chromatic mediants are so warm and enchanting. The major scale reversed is the Phrygian scale. Instead of a rising tetrachord from C to F, you have a falling tetrachord of the same intervals two whole steps and one half step from C down to G. There is a beautiful Indian Raga built on that symmetry. half the scale is from C major and the other half is from C phrygian. The Geometry of music is an aesthetically pleasing way to embrace concepts in music theory. I'm just getting into it but I'm willing to wager a lot that it will be a fruitful path to pursue.
you play so well, where can I find your music
Bending a harmonica note on non chromatic harmonica has to do with whether your sucking or blowing and if you increase/decrease the vacuum in your mouth and how tight the vacuum is sometimes you don't want to be tight like well a vacuum and allowing some air to escape can change a lot more than turning your harmonica chromatic but getting tremolo or something like that Harmonica is highly underappreciated with the true skill a master has.
I often think that were we to be visited tomorrow by a highly-advanced alien civilisation several orders of magnitude beyond us in both intellectual and physical prowess, they would still take one look at guys like you Noel and say in whatever were their lexical equivalents, "F*ck me! Look what this one can do?!"
